I’m so mad at myself. I’ve been SUPER PRODUCTIVE all day, but I just sliced open my fingertip. I was about to start bagging the last box of books, gdi. It’s not a huge cut, but it’s deep enough that I’m semi-worried it might need stitches.
God, it’s like running a marathon and tripping ten feet from the finish line. GREAT JOB, SELF. NO STAR FOR U.
Out of curiosity, what was Corbin's band color? Orange?
Corbin is a blue-band Alpha, which is why he made the little quip about shattering reality in Secret Identities. Mal inherited the expression of his powers from his father. Their abilities are above mere body control, for various reasons.
Okay, so I just have to ask: Did baby/toddler Marshal ever chew on/try to eat any people?
He nibbled on fingers once or twice, but he quickly learned not to do that. Whenever anyone yelled or cried out after being bit, it upset him— so much so, it’d startle him into hysterics. He DID have a problem with sniffing and licking, though. Hand lotion was one of his favorite things.
Marshal’s better about it as an adult. Sort of. Most of the time.
I just want to say that I utterly adore Sofia! She is an absolute treasure. And Secret Identities made me much fonder of Corbin, especially the last scene.
Sofia is SO GREAT. She is great big geek, and found her true calling in computer programming. Jack has no idea what she does in her office all day, and nobody can quite explain it to him. Sofia has been a stay-at-home mom since Rosario was born, but she has kept herself very busy with her side jobs.
Corbin is the worst person with the best intentions. He’s a lot gentler than people expect, especially with children. He kind of hates 90% of adults, but kids lack a lot of the the BS he despises.
I was rereading your old TPC posts, and you mentioned that you ship Jason/Catherine. How would their relationship be like? :D
The way that the layman sees the Valkyries in the posterverse is very similar to the way the Gothamites see the the Bat clan. They’re something of an urban legend, and everyone has an opinion about them. Jason couldn’t help but be interested in a hard femme lady crimefighter with a motorcycle. She wouldn’t approve of Jason’s methods, and she wouldn’t be passive about it. He would get his ass kicked a few times. Catherine views sex as a fun pastime, and post-Gunsmoke, she pursues her partners pretty aggressively. It’d be loud, messy, and would result in a lot of broken furniture.
hi! sorry, this is gonna be rather an ignorant question, but I couldn't find specific descriptions in the text. What is Maks's ethnicity? I'm aware that he has roots in Russia, but the way some artists (including canon ones) portray him strikes me that his darker colors might be more than just tan! sorry. i feel dumb asking this. i just dont want to depict him the wrong way. oh and sECRET IDENTITY WAS GUT WRENCHING BTW Couldntve expected less from u; 12/10 would gift to friend
It’s not something that I’ve gone into specifically, but the fanartists are quite good at reading my mind. Maks’ father was an ethnically Armenian Russian. He has an olive skin tone and, as he said in Grinder, a tiny bear’s worth of body hair.
I’m so glad you enjoyed Secret Identities (as gut-wrenching as it was in places)! I think that it’s been my favorite one to write so far. I enjoy tracing back the influences that the characters have had on each other. Rosario is a killer hand-to-hand fighter, but only because she was taught by her mother. In her late teens/early twenties, Roxy became known for being the last person you’d want to take in a fight, but only because Corbin trained her personally. For good or bad, Corbin influenced a lot of people.
“Metaphorically stalked”… do we get to find out more about this? The more I find out about the Galans the more I love them. Did Sofia’s mother ever come round?
The Galán family is just a treasure. A loud, highly dramatic treasure, but a treasure just the same. Sofia’s parents, Barbara and José, found each other before posters were publicly acknowledged. Mama was sure that she would end up alone, and even though she ended up happily married, the paranoia shifted to cover her children. It took time, but she eventually realized that as unorthodox as their relationships were, they made her kids happy. Sofia and Roxy were the first to give her grandchildren, so that warmed her up a bit. Sal earned points when he told her that his mother was Latina.
I plan to devote a Timely Tale to Estefania and Sal, but it won’t be until the second volume. Things to look forward to, I suppose!
How many characters will be covered in the Secret Files? And will there only be Golden and Silver gen people?
The Secret Files will be limited to the characters and events current during Origins. Every character with more than a namedrop mention will be included. I will not be covering the Bronze gen, as those would be some pretty massive spoilers.
How did Roxy's family react to her becoming John's sidekick (and masquerading as a boy for that matter)? And did people from her town- classmates, neighbors, etc- recognize her when Champ first became a public figure?
Her brothers had a Very Serious Talk with her when she asked to run away with the drunk superhero who partially demolished one of the barns. Roxy was only four when her parents died, so her brothers basically raised her. As great as they were, they really didn’t know what to do with a sister. She grew up as ~one of the boys~, so her cross-dressing wasn’t too much of a surprise for them. They didn’t always understand her, but they loved her. They knew how suffocated she felt, so they let her go. When she outed herself years later, her hometown forgot about how she was That Grant Girl. Some of them suspected when she showed up as the Champ, but her name was not public knowledge. As an adult, she’s something of a local celebrity. The whole family goes down to Texas at least once a year.
Jack was not prepared to meet Rosario’s six overprotective uncles and gaggle of cousins. Not prepared at ALL.
So it's a little unclear and normally I'd assume the first but given that it's you anything is possible, so... Is Sofia's "I LIKE a guy that's never happened before!" thing a lesbian thing or a gray-ace thing?
Sofia and Roxy are both gold star lesbians. Sofia was very close to her mother, so she sincerely wanted to please her. Mama Galán espoused what she felt was the secret of a happy life— a husband, home, and children. As a VERY devout Catholic, she wanted Sofia to have a traditional family. She told her that she was a “late bloomer” and that she just hadn’t “found the right man yet”. Sofia believed it until she met Roxy. She knew that she’d found the right one for her.
It's a bit of an odd question but it's something I find really interesting. How did Sofia and Roxy get pregnant?
Sofia and Roxy used the same sperm donor: Ramon Benavente, a pink-band with the ability to amplify the strength and effectiveness of other posterpowers. He was Sofia’s Alpha partner, though they parted ways after the third block. Roxy and Sofia went on to the police academy, and Ramon went through the Capstone class. He was hired by the BPHA almost immediately after graduation. Sofia wanted him to be their donor because he has Puerto Rican and Irish ancestry, is someone that she could trust, and she’d already researched his family history extensively.
Roxy didn’t think that she ever wanted to carry a child herself, which is why there is a considerable age gap between their daughters. She changed her mind about it in her late thirties. Rosario was in school and both of their careers were stable, so it felt like a good time to add a new member to their family. Libby is paler than her sister, and she inherited Roxy’s freckles as well.
"Give him hell, honey. He needs it." I feel like this applies to all of the men in Roz's life from then and forever.
IT REALLY, REALLY DOES. Fortunately, giving people hell is what Rosario Joan Galán-Grant does best. She literally cut her teeth on Ernest Wright, and dealing with Mal prepared her for just about anything.
Can I tell you how excited I am that the leader of the Valkyries is a baseliner? I mean, that is so completely awesome. (Obviously Roxy is the Sheriff and also doesn't have powers, which is also amazingly impressive but it's still pretty cool.)
The politics of power classifications are very much A Thing for the Collectors. Before Estefania took over the Valkyries, they were like the rest of the teams— almost exclusively made up of Alphas. The squad leaders are expected to be the best of the very best. Sal, being one of the most powerful posters on record, is a good example of what they usually looked for in their squad leaders. Estefania is a marvelous exception, and I love her for it. We’ll be seeing more of her in February c:
How often does it happen for siblings of multiple births to have different band colors/classifications?
It’s rare for monozygotic twins or triplets to have a huge disparity between their colors/levels, but fraternal twins may have a gap between their perceived classifications. As I’ve discussed in the past, posterchildren inherit characteristics (and therefore band colors) of their parents’ posterpowers. Example: Clay and his identical twin brother are both blue-band Alphas, but Sofia’s fraternal twin brothers, Tomas and Manuel, are red- and green-band Betas.
Secret Identities was funny and sweet and delightful all the way through AND THEN THAT FUCKING LAST PASSAGE HOW DARE YOU /sob
IN MY OWN DEFENSE, I ALMOST CUT THAT LAST PART. But my editor reminded me that it served a narrative purpose, so I kept it in. I told you all that there would be one scene that you’d want to punch me for, and that’s it. Corbin Underwood: Professional Sadsack.
I've been really curious about Corbin's gender and gender identity and I loved the side-mentions to it in Secret Identities, but it made me curious about his pronoun choices? Because Corbin always seems to be referred to with he/his pronouns, and I was wondering if he ever changed them? Also sidenote that I loved this timely tale and I think it's my favorite like even more than Grinder and Maks is my favorite character like ever so.
I’m glad that you enjoyed it! The impact it had on your URL is delightful.
Corbin uses male pronouns almost exclusively. His identity lands at different places on the gender spectrum over the course of his life, but he sees himself as male regardless of what his body is doing at the time. His upbringing was rough, and it left him with an aversion toward female pronouns and traditionally feminine things. The only time he allows it is when it’s necessary for his cover during a mission. Believe it or not, the Corbin we see in Secret Identities is a MELLOWED OUT version of himself.
kITTY I’M ONLY HALF DONE BUT SOFIA AND ROXY ARE ON JACK/ROZ LEVELS OF OTP FOR ME THEY’RE SO UNFAIRLY CUTE HOW
It pleases me that the they are one of the happiest, most committed couples in the series. Two lesbian moms, two daughters, their superpowered dog, and the sad teenage grandpa war hero they adopted: arguably the most “normal” family in Foundation.
